Advice For Brace Wearers

Are you about to have adult braces fitted, or are you already a brace wearer who would like some more information and advice? If you come under one of those two categories, hopefully Hampstead Orthodontic Practice can put your mind at ease.

Throughout your visits to us, our caring and experienced staff are on-hand to answer any of your questions or concerns, but we recognise that you may want to do your own research as well. The first point to make is that dental braces for adults are no quick fix, and it will take time and commitment to achieve results. This means attending both regular appointments with the orthodontist to get your brace adjusted, and check-ups with your dentist. You’ll also need to continue your normal dental care routine, and be sure to wear your removable brace or retainer, as instructed, however inconvenient it might be.

Patients also question what they can and can’t do during the process. You’ll usually get a list of foods and drinks you should avoid, so don’t be tempted to indulge! Even apples can damage the brace, and lengthen the process of straightening teeth.  If you play contact sports or play an instrument, please seek advice to avoid any difficulties.

Be warned though, there can be after effects if you’re not a good patient. If you’ve not kept your teeth clean or kept wearing your retainer, you could be left with stains on your teeth or teeth that have moved.  Don’t let your orthodontic treatment be in vain.

All About Adult Braces

Orthodontics is carried out by a specialist, who has undergone general dentistry training and also gained specialist qualifications to fit braces. Going to an orthodontist to have adult braces fitted may seem like a daunting prospect, so it may help to know more about the treatment and why people have it carried out.

The British Orthodontic Society state that people have braces fitted to improve the health of the teeth, improve the appearance of face and teeth, and to make it easier for the teeth to function when eating. Depending on the condition of your teeth, and which of the categories above you fall into, you could either end up wearing a fixed or removable brace. Technology has meant that you can also have braces fitted that are near invisible.

The process of straightening teeth in this way is a long one and can take anything from 6 to 24 months to finish. Regular appointments are needed to adjust the brace, and there may be a need for tooth extractions, which your regular dentist will carry out. Although there are a lot of appointments to go through the end result can be achieved with very little discomfort. It’s important to heed advice about caring for your teeth and brace, and what foods to avoid, or things may become uncomfortable!
