First Impressions Count

Although we may not care to admit it, most of us subscribe to the old adage that ‘first impressions count’. Indeed, we all form impressions of people based partly on the way they look, regardless of how enlightened or open-minded we believe ourselves to be. Quite simply, peoples’ appearances are generally the first thing you notice about them.

Naturally, the opposite of this also true, as you too will be immediately reviewed to some extent on the way you look. The obvious result of this is that your confidence may suffer, especially if you are particularly self-conscious about a certain aspect of your appearance.

Up until relatively recently, there was very little that people could do to alter or improve their appearance. Thankfully, modern technologies now make it possible for people to adapt many different facets of their appearance.

For example, people who are self-conscious about their teeth can now benefit from a wide range of orthodontic treatments that can help them to alter their appearance. Indeed, even the most rudimentary of orthodontic treatment options can make a massive difference to an individual’s overall sense of well being.

Here at the Hampstead Orthodontic Practice, we provide high-quality adult orthodontics that can help anybody to improve the appearance of their smile. So, if you think your appearance could benefit from the addition of some of the most effective adult braces available, explore our web pages further or call 0207 2842827 and speak to one of our friendly advisors, today.

When Do Adults Need Braces?

There are a number of reasons why adults need braces, from serious dental issues to purely cosmetic factors. Most often, people want to straighten teeth which are misaligned, since this can affect the way people bite and chew their food. Having crooked teeth can sometimes lead to bigger issues concerning jaw problems which can then even lead to back problems and headaches.

In some people, the teeth of the upper jaw are pushed too far forward. In others, the bottom teeth stick out further than the upper ones. Both can stop you from biting properly and potentially lead to bone damage.

Other people get adult braces for cosmetic reasons, to perfect their smile and boost confidence. Braces may even help with breathing problems and help to be able to chew better on their food.

If you’re considering dental braces for adults, your first port of call should be an orthodontist, who will take some X-rays and look carefully at your mouth before deciding what work, if any, should be done. If your dentist recommends you see an orthodontist, don’t put it off, or you could risk having longer-term health problems.

At Hampstead Orthodontist Practice, we’re experts in adult orthodontics, based in north London and with a highly skilled team of four orthodontists and support staff. Why Invest in Adult Orthodontics?

If you’ve looked in the mirror recently, you might be wondering about your smile. Many adults have less-than-perfect teeth and in the modern world there’s a lot of pressure to have that ultimate Hollywood smile, with aesthetic appearance being an important consideration. That means many people are looking to adult orthodontics to give them the teeth they’ve always wanted, but just why should you invest?

At the most basic level, people choose this kind of treatment for cosmetic reasons. They could be fed up with their crooked smile and want to finally do something about it, and with so many different options available now’s the perfect time to take the plunge. Discrete braces such as Invisalign and Incognito will mean that no-one need ever know you’re getting treatment, and it doesn’t even matter if you had braces as a child – teeth can still shift in the intervening years, so it might be time to take a closer look at how your teeth have changed.

Of course, there are more practical reasons for straightening teeth as well. Straight teeth are easier to clean and can reduce wear to offer benefits for years to come, hopefully keeping decay, cavities and any major treatments at bay. It can be a preventative measure just as much a cosmetic consideration, and at the end of it you’ll be left with a smile you can be proud of. What could be better than that? Get in touch if you want to discuss the options and you could soon see why investing in adult braces could be the best decision you ever make.

Braces – Not Just for Children

Think of braces and you’ll probably think back to the time when you were a teenager, stuck with a mouth full of metal for months on end with repeated trips to the orthodontist to get them adjusted. It invariably won’t conjure up overly happy memories, but these days braces aren’t just for children. Whether your teeth have shifted since your previous brace or if you were lucky enough to avoid the orthodontist altogether, the current emphasis on having perfectly straight teeth could well have you looking in the mirror and considering alternative options. Adult braces are growing in popularity as a way to give people of all ages the smile of their dreams, and luckily the days of train tracks are long gone.

When it comes to adult orthodontics, the emphasis is squarely on a combination of aesthetic appeal and practicality. Traditional metal braces can easily leave you feeling self-conscious, and in the busy modern world that simply isn’t acceptable. That’s why most adult options have been specifically designed to be as discrete as possible, with many braces being nearly and sometimes even totally invisible to the people around you – Invisalign braces, for example, are simply plastic aligners worn in place of traditional options, whereas Incognito braces are metal braces worn behind the teeth for total invisibility. There are even treatment options that can speed up results so you get your perfect smile sooner than you thought possible, so if you want to increase your confidence both during and after treatment make sure to get in touch to discuss the adult orthodontic options available.

Straightening Out Myths about Adult Braces

Myth 1 – If your teeth are really bad, you’ll have to have “train tracksâ€
For many adults seeking orthodontic treatment, there’s that nagging feeling that they’ll have to spend three years with great metal arrangements and head-gear strapped to their smile. But the fact is that both child and adult braces have come on in leaps and bounds in the past decade.

All our dental braces for adults are designed to be as imperceptible as possible. In more severe cases, Ice Clear brace brackets can be used to mask dental work as much as possible. It’s impossible to say which treatment is best without a consultation, but we’re confident we can fix your smile with the minimum of fuss.

Myth 2 – Orthodontists will only treat severe and medically pertinent cases
Many of our clients are adults who only have slight flaws in their smile. For example, a small gap between two teeth they’d like closing, a slightly protruding tooth etc. Orthodontic treatment for cosmetic or personal reasons is absolutely fine.

Myth 3 – Braces are for kids
According to some online sources (e.g. advice website Braces.org) around one in five orthodontic patients are adults.

Myth 4 – Braces are painful and take a long time to work
There is usually an initial adjustment period where the mouth can feel sensitive and a bit delicate, but it’s best to think of it as wearing in a new pair of shoes. Once you’re used to them, you’ll forget they’re there. In terms of treatment time, some braces need only be worn a matter of months.

Follow the Dental Example of a Duchess

When Kate Middleton became Princess Catherine, all eyes weren’t exactly on her teeth. But fellow orthodontic treatment experts have rushed to point out the Duchess of Cambridge’s exceptional dental work. According to an article in The Telegraph, it’s more than likely the princess used similar adult braces to our Invisalign or Incognito ranges.

Invisalign braces work by fitting removable aligners to the patient’s teeth. The aligners can be removed any time but are designed to be as imperceptible as possible. Although we recommend wearing the aligners day and night, we know it can be a great relief for our patients to be able to remove their dental wear occasionally.

Incognito braces are fixed to the back of the teeth rather than the front. It’s this type of dental work the princess most likely invested in before her April 2011 wedding. Incognito braces are typically offered to adults needing more extensive work than habitually dealt with by Invisalign. Both can, however, be considered.

Although the princess’s dental work has never been confirmed, it’s likely she opted for the most natural smile by allowing her orthodontist to move her teeth in micro-rotations. For many of our clients, too, the perfect smile isn’t about Hollywood perfection, but about enhancing the natural brilliance of their innate grin.

Veneers are becoming less popular in the U.K thanks to great orthodontic treatments and the popularity of the natural British smile. Our treatments can help you iron out those little imperfections without losing the real, smiling you.

3 Tips for Learning to Smile

Sometimes have a little trouble identifying your good side? We can help with all your teeth straightening needs, but when those adult braces come off it’s up to you to find your smile again! Although our products are designed to help adults stay 100% confident, we know there’s nothing quite like that first day you leave our surgery brace-free with amazing teeth. Here are a few tips for post-brace smile brilliance!

1.    Practice makes perfect, and whilst we can’t always control the glorious crinkles around our eyes when we find something truly hilarious, it IS possible to learn how to smile for photographs, in business meetings etc. Every celebrity, from Kimberly Walsh to Megan Fox admits that the perfect smile for the lens doesn’t always come naturally. It’s time to get your Smartphone out and take a few experimental shots in front of the mirror!

2.    Take the Smile Challenge and practice your newfound grin on folks you might usually ignore or just offer a humble curl of the lip to – people who hold the door for you, homeless people, strangers, etc.

3.    Don’t fake it too hard! We’ve all done impressions of Keira Knightly’s pout in front of the mirror. Did you look a little ridiculous? Yes. When your orthodontic treatment is over it’s not time to hide those pearly whites behind a forced grin of taught cheeks and tense lips. The absolute best thing you can do for your grin is to embrace it. After all, we truly smile with our eyes!

What Can I Eat When Wearing Adult Braces?

If you are considering adult braces then you may have a few concerns about your dental health when wearing the braces, such as what you can eat.

It’s understandable that you will be wary about what you eat in order for your teeth to be as straight as possible when the dental braces for adults come off, and so you don’t break them.

You can eat most foods when wearing adult braces, but here at Hampstead Orthodontic Practice we advise that you are wary of some foods.

We recommend that you avoid eating whole apples, cut them into wedges instead. You should definitely avoid sweets such as caramels, boiled candies, nut brittle or anything similar, as this can damage your brace and lead to fillings.

However, if you do find yourself eating sugary foods then we suggest you rinse your mouth with water within a few minutes of consumption. Any other hard foods should also be avoided as they can cause your adult braces to snap or bend.

Here at Hampstead Orthodontic Practice we are leading orthodontists in London that can help you achieve the perfect smile. We offer fantastic dental braces for adults that are ideal for straightening teeth and we can also provide you with orthodontic advice and support.

So for the best orthodontists in London, you should be sure to come to us here at Hampstead Orthodontic Practice, as our orthodonticl services will give you a reason to smile.
